As soon as he'd heard the thud, Carter knew Jack was dead. With this knowledge, the agent felt a surge of sadness, concern, and resolution. Concern, because the group was deep underground and someone had already been claimed by the dark denizens of the area. Sadness came because a guardian and an old friend of the family had just died. Finally, resolution blazed in Carter's heart because protecting the Ambassador now rested on him alone.
"Let's go Bethany!" Carter said as he raced after the Colonials. He hardly needed their instructions to run. Meanwhile, the soldiers of Vertigo Team were engaging the invisible enemy. All of them were firing wherever the shadows moved, but there seemed to be few, if any, results. As he watched some of his men fall, George wondered if he should return for Jack's body. Under normal circumstances, it wouldn't have been a question. But the commandos were few in number, probably outnumbered, and they still had a delegation to escort.
But Jack was a member of the delegation, which meant that the commandos had to at least recover the body. In a commanding tone over the squad comm, George said, "Two of you stay with the Ambassador. The others, come with me. Those with me, give cover fire, and never mind the creatures. Just keep them away from me. Follow my lead, cover my exit." He then shouted to everyone in the tunnel, "Everyone, close your eyes. No time to explain why. Just do it. Your vision depends on it!"
If the things in the tunnels could see it all, it would be because they were hypersensitive to light or sound. With this in mind, George closed his eyes as he hurled a flashbang. If his theory was right, then the grenade would cause crippling pain to the creatures. Once it was over, he raced through the tunnel, back around the corner. He did his best to ignore the screams of the soldiers of all sides, tried to ignore the heavy clang as his own men fell to the ground dead. But after turning a corner and moving a short way, he saw Jack's body. The commando officer injected a strength enhancer, and grabbed the corpse. He heard swift firing from laser and ballistic weapons, and what sounded like footsteps behind him. Voices followed them, and both moved closer as George tried to reach the platform where everyone waited.
Then all of them faded as he ran into the delegations, nearly knocking over some of the escorts. Once he turned around, he noticed that the two commandos who had gone with him hadn't returned. Not that he'd expected that. Two of his men as well as Carter remained, and all were prepared to defend Bethany. George eventually answered the Kirdoni Ambassador, "There's nothing to indicate that the escorts were shot at all. It may have been something else."

The shooting was sudden and the Keltaken grabbed ahold of his goshwaken comrade hurrying along with the confederate delegates. Neither of the two knew what the hell was going on but never the less they needed to ensure that they kept their heads down and didn't anger their guests anymore than they likely would have. "I can't belive all of this...to think that things could have gone so downhill so quickly...what the hell are those failed experiments doing here..we stopped creating necromorphs after the first war" the Keltaken could only run these questions over and over in his mind. He had to put them out of his head as he tried to keep himself alive, holding onto the wounded Goshwaken he continued to follow the larger group there was little light. It didn't feel right hiding behind the confederate bodyguards but there was little else that could be done in this current situation.
"I will have to make a personal note to thank the confederacy if i make it out of here alive..." the Keltaken said to himself as he watched them take care of the developing situation around him. They where very well organized a true test of their abilities to be sure, he could only hope that it would be enough to ensure that he would make it out of this alive.

"I have no damn idea. There was nothing like this in the official reports of the Underground incident. We have to leave, and we have to do it fast.", the Feldwebel replied. One of the volunteers used the back of his rifle to break the wooden gate, and they all entered the building, closing the gate behind them. To all of those at least vaguely familiar to how Earth and the early human colonies used to look like, this was clearly a metro station. What once had been carrying people from one corner of the planet to the other, was now their only way to get out of this damned place.
For some reason, the station was considerably colder than the outside. Its once elegant hallways were now old and scorched, remains of a once glorious past. But even so, there were some signs of modernity in there, and that's what the group of Colonials and foreigners followed. Even so, the walls were filled with various old propaganda posters, most likely belonging to the hold Human Colonial Alliance. Join the Second Jump to Triangulum! Fight the Keltakens! Report any enemies of the System at your closest Administrator! The trail of signs eventually lead to the S-Line. Reaching the iron door blocking it, the volunteers placed a charge on it, blowing it up, before entering the hall.
The place was rather large, with multiple tracks in there. Back in the past, it was probably not directly connected to the civilian metro, having been converted a a certain point, the iron door proving it. But what was really weird in it, compared to the rest of the Underground, was that it was literally filled with skeletons. Rather recent ones. Workers and soldiers, all wearing the military uniforms that the Federated Colonies used before and during the First Intergalactic War. All dead, on the ground. It seemed that they had found what happened to the teams that were sent here back before the Battle of Drathia, when the Federal Government was trying to turn this into a museum.. before the incident, and before all of this was covered up.
Clearly scared, the Colonials stopped, and tried to avoid stepping on the bones, but it was clearly impossible to do so. They were everywhere. Even the Feldwebel stopped.. but then, the fear of what was coming after them defeated the fear of what was in front of them, and they all advanced. In the middle of the hall, on the first line, an old train was simply standing there. Their way out. A skeleton was gripping the handle to one of the doors, and something not so fun was scratched on it. They are here. But.. the question was, who were they?
As the volunteers removed the skeleton and opened the door, the Feldwebel turned towards the delegations. "This should be our way out. It should eventually lead to the main metro system, even if we will have to break a few containment gates on our way out. But well.."
The officer didn't manage to finish his words. as the gates they had closed beneath them suddenly exploded, and something that looked like a dark, foggy substance started to enter the hall. A volunteer nearby tired to fire at it, before he also dropped dead. They had to run, and they had to run now. With no more time to explain anything, the Freikorps soldiers pushed the delegations into the train, and slowly but surely, the old engine of the train started, the doors closed.. and they left the station just in time. But they still had to break something... the large containment gates blocking the tunnel.
"Brace for impact!"
And then darkness.
But behind them, they left a broken gate. And through it, shadows and fog started to slowly expand..
Eventually, the Colonials and the delegations would wake up, more or less dizzy. The hit had managed to knock most of them unconscious, except for the lucky few which had armors on them, but even those would have needed some time to recover. The train had somehow managed to break through, with the price of the frontal side of it being crushed, but they were now leaving the Underworld behind, heading for safety. The Feldwebel slowly stood up, taking his helmet down, and touching the cut he had on his forehead, from which blood was dripping. They had been lucky. Even if nearly half of those who had entered died there..they had escaped. And now, after seeing it for himself, the old man was sure that all those stories about what was down below where true. He had to warn the Central High Command about it, and that as soon as possible. Not before long, they left the lower levels, heading for the Federal District.
As the train stopped, in the relative artificial light of the planet, it was clear that the Federal District had managed to survive the earthquake a little bit better than the rest. The damage was minimal. And they soon noticed the objective of their journey. The Hegemonic Palace. Less of a palace, at least compared to the traditional human definition of the word, and more of a fort. The building was huge, of course, compared to the usual buildings, but it was still much smaller than the Dome, as an example. I had the form of a star fort, with its walls, but looked much more modern, and pretty much fit the military role of the Hegemon. The train had seemingly stopped right next to its walls, while the plaza around them was relatively empty. But there was someone waiting for them.
It was a group of Axiom Knights, at least from the looks of it. But more important, was the person in front of them. A young girl, by the looks of it, with a long, neat, silver-white hair, wearing a long and somewhat frilly white with black dress, in the same color scheme as the uniform of the Knights. Her silver eyes, although not looking like it, were clearly blind, not only because of the way she seemed to be looking at the train, but also clearly supported by the blind cane she was holding in her hands. Cardinal.
The group left the train, stopping in front of the group of Axiom Knights. Most of the Colonials seemed to be relieved.. they had finally escaped that place. Now everything was going to be fine. Cardinal smiled. And the knights opened fire.
Precise shots hit each of the Freikorps soldiers. In a few mere seconds, they were massacred, dead, bloody bodies falling all around the members of the delegations. The Feldwebel tried to make a few steps forward after a bullet pierced his chest, only to fall on his back. The few volunteers who tried to fire back were quickly exterminated. The Oberleutenant fell to his knees, as a red stain of blood quickly expanded on his pike-gray coat, his chest pierced. The young boy tried to take out his pistol, and to fire at Cardinal... but he fell on the ground in a pool of his own blood before he could do it. And then, there was only silence.
"Well, I'm sorry that you had to witness this. It's a pleasure to meet you. Welcome, to Xalion.", Cardinal said, smirking.

Bethany watched the Freikorps members fall to the floor, and even if the Cardinal couldn't see it, anger and wrath burnt brightly in her eyes. She exchanged a brief look with Carter, who nodded and stepped forward.
He knelt beside the corpse of the Oberleutnant, taking the volunteer's pulse. He felt nothing, looked back to the Ambassador, and said, “He’s dead, Beth. There’s nothing I can do.”
“It’s not your fault, Carter. It’s not like you shot him,” she replied, motioning for the agent to return to her side. Carter grabbed the crucifix that the dead man held, looking to Bethany for what to do with it. It was hers, after all. The Ambassador saw this and said in an even tone, “Leave it.”
Carter nodded, and moved behind Bethany, his hand firmly gripping his lowered weapon. George’s commandos did the same. They knew they were in a delicate situation, but they had also just witnessed murder. They also remained dazed from the crash earlier, and knew they were outnumbered and in no condition for a fight.
Bethany understood this, locked up how she really felt, and said to the Cardinal in a neutral tone, “Don't worry about me, Cardinal. Everyone in my delegation has seen worse things. My cousin runs Imperial Intelligence, my remaining guard is a long serving agent, and the commandos you see are veterans who fought the Abyssals. And the pleasure is mine. Ambassador Bethany Rhodes of the Dothvalian Confederacy. So far, Xalion has proven an interesting place, to say the least.”
As she stared down at the corpses, Bethany darkly thought, “Jack was right about them.”

The groups were soon joined by another group of Axiom Knights coming from the direction of the Palace, stopping and saluting Cardinal. Looking in their direction, the silver haired girl smiled. "Get rid of the bodies. We shouldn't let them out too long, there is always a chance that they will catch the virus and rise.", the girl ordered, with the knights quickly complying. The knights were clearly enjoying this, spitting on the bodies of their rivals, and throwing them rather unceremoniously in a nearby armored car. When the white coated men came to the body of the Obersleutenant and raised him from the ground, one of them noticed something. "Hey, this guy is still breathing.", the knight said to his commanding officer, another knight. "And who cares? Throw him with the others, he won't survive for long anyway." And with that, the wounded volunteer was thrown brutally in the car among the dead bodies.
Looking back in the direction of the delegations, Cardinal smiled again. "Xalion is indeed an interesting place.. but you have come at a bad time... if you know what I mean. Because of that, I hope that you understand that all of you here are under arrest.". the blind girl continued, with the knights behind her pointing their rifles and swords at the foreigners. "My deepest apologies, but we can't possibly allow you to interfere with our business. You will be released once everything is over." Cardinal smirked. "But the Federation will fall tonight."

Carter was surprised by what the knight had said. And then he dismissed it. He had been through a great deal in the past few hours, and he was still trying to relax from the excursion into the Underground. But regardless of how he felt about the situation, Carter knew he wasn't in a position to act.
As did Bethany, who said in an even tone, "Give them your weapons, follow their instructions. No arguments." Carter and the three remaining commandos all obeyed. George was unconcerned, however. Even if his obvious weapons were taken, he still had everything aboard his armour if things went wrong. Bethany looked towards the body of the Oberleutenant, and said a silent prayer for the wounded soldier. She then asked the Knight leader, "I trust you'll be taking us somewhere?"

The Commonwealth entourage were still recovering from the crash, and now they have to witness such a grisly massacre as this. Disgusting. So this is what the holier-than-thou knights of the Axiom Church do when disasters like these strike. Perhaps they were the ones who planned all of this from the beginning. What a shameful act on their part.
"Well...", muttered the Ambassador. "Seems that we can't really do anything, do we?" With that, he motioned to the 6 remaining Pryzniki to put their weapons down. Well... only their obvious weapons actually. They have retractable blades and pistols inside their suits if they needed them. But with their rifles no longer in their possession, they can't really put much of a fight against the numerically superior Axiom Knights. They are long range specialists after all.
The one remaining Tesla Trooper merely deactivated his energy pack, and powered down his tesla coils. He can't take his ENTIRE suit off, especially with the toxic atmosphere around.
"But I trust that we will not be harmed as long we don't do anything funny, ehem?"

"Who knows? It depends on how I'll feel later.. but I firstly want to show you something. Please follow me.", Cardinal replied, smirking, before she started to walk. Not exactly nicely, the knights forced all delegations to follow them, as they headed for the gate, and inside the Hegemonic Palace. No one told them what they were going to see, or what was going to happen, but the silver haired girl seemed to be pretty enthusiastic about it. As they started to ascend though, for the first time, the foreigners would be able to hear muffled screams and shouts from the distance.
The hallways through which they were taken were very austere. No special decorations. Everything was mostly gray. Old paintings with scenes from the history of the Colonies, emblems, decorations, and portraits were hanged on the walls. Among them, the old portraits of two certain persons were repeatedly seen, known to those with knowledge about the Colonial history. Hegemon Alexander von Scheerling, and Hegemon Julius von Vylkov. But one thing that was strange to those with a little bit of knowledge about the Colonial protocol was that the palace wasn't guarded by the usual Hegemonic troops. Axiom Knights seemed to be everywhere. Of course, if one were to think at what was happening, then it wasn't all that strange.
Eventually, the group reached the upper levels, and eventually, they came on top of the fort like walls of the palace, giving them an extensive view to the plaza in front of the palace. The place was filled with people. Tens of thousands of humans, aliens, foreigners. Protesting, shouting, waving red flags. To those who were able to speak Colonial Standard, it was soon clear that these people were demanding the immediate resignation of the Federal Government, the ending of the martial law, and new elections. All rights given to them by the Articles of Colonization. But Cardinal simply laughed.
"Fools. Rights and freedoms.. they are certainly nice, but look at what they have done. They have softened the human race. They let the human worlds be infiltrated by aliens who only weakened mankind even more. Where are the once proud humans, who conquered galaxies? The once proud Colonials, who rebelled for what they have believed in? Long gone. They now take everything for granted.. rights.. and their precious Articles. The ideals of the Colonies.. although nice...are expired. Outdated. There is no place for them in this new world." The silver eyed girl seemed to be looking in the direction of the plaza, even if she wasn't able to see anything. Smiling, Cardinal snapped her fingers.
Now, perhaps for the first time, the foreigners would have been able to see that surrounding the protesters were groups of Colonial soldiers, easy to recognize in their flexible nanosuits, with their blue-red armbands. They were surrounding the protesters in a battle formation, with many of them spread among the protesters themselves. And as soon as Cardinal snapped her fingers, the leader of the knights ordered something in his radio.
And the soldiers opened fire. Without mercy.
Screams and shouts of death started to spread as the protesters were mowed down without mercy by bullets, swords, and lasers. Red flags fell on the floor stained with the blood of so many different races. One by one, men, women, children, aliens. No mercy. No thinking, as their desperate cries were in vain.
"It was funny seeing the Federation decline, really. Despite all the good things they wanted to make, the universe itself seemed to be against them. The First Intergalactic War was the first spark, but the corruption started way earlier, after the Massacre of Terra Nova. Those politicians, up in their endless games and discussions, lost contact with reality a long time ago. The Gods want to see the Federation dead, we want to see it dead. We are simply the bringers of fate.. but we will end this, once and for all. To ensure that the human civilization, not any other, will be the one ruling this part of the universe."
Cardinal smirked.
"And you my dear friends, have the great chance to witness such a historic event. Come on, enjoy the rivers of blood and death!"

Xalion
On the balcony, George swore loudly inside his soundproofed helmet. Right before him, a massacre was unfolding. And this, like so many other things tonight, he was powerless to stop. As gunshots and heavy thuds rang through the air, he tried to start estimating the body count. By the size of the square, he suspected it was at least in the thousands. Perhaps the tens of thousands.
For Carter, everything Jack said earlier had been proven correct. The Axiom Church was a menace, and they were an evil entity that would hurt anyone they had the chance to. Once he had left Xalion, the agent decided he would be working against them. The rhetoric of the Cardinal about government corruption and leaders being out of touch with reality was all very familiar. He'd heard it all the time from members of the Enemies Of Humanity. In time, the Axiom Church too would be answered. But now was not the time. Now was the time to mourn, for all of the doomed souls below.
As for Bethany, sobs wracked her body as tears cascaded down her face. She watched as one by one, everyone below was murdered. When the Ambassador could speak, she exclaimed in a tone of real fury, "I dont care if I'm a diplomat! I'm not masking my feelings any longer! If the Abyssals were here, they'd be laughing at you. You've done their work for them. Delivered a death blow to the Federated Colonies, and slaughtered its people. Even as Confederate soldiers die by the millions on Terra Nova to save the people of the Colonies. You keep talking about the human race, but you lost your humanity ages ago. So the Federated Colonies were weak, out of touch with reality in your words. So you removed them. But there's no way you can justify the evil act of indiscriminate mass murder you've just committed. Jack was right about you. I'm sure that his opinion of the Axiom Church was reported." When she had finished, Bethany's gaze settled solely on the Cardinal.
Triangulum, Confederate Space, Karsopolis
In the Confederacy, Governor Karson Sharp Of Karsopolis was deeply concerned by the footage being broadcast. Something evil was rising in the place of the Federated Colonies. And so it had all been in vain. He turned away from the holoscreen, and began to exit the room.
He considered who to leave it all to, and the answer came almost immediately. Eventually, he reached a communications room, and chose the frequency for Confederate Research and Development. Once there was an answer, Sharp said in an even tone, "Activate Project Super Sapien. And do your best to go quickly. The Confederacy hasn't been in this much danger since its Founding."
He then activated another frequency, this one going directly to Marcus, the Head Of Confederate Logistics. He said in the same tone, "The factories must run again. Full production. I'll explain more later. And please, call a press conference."
With this, the Confederate ruler closed both frequencies, and began the journey to the conference. Soon, there would be major changes.
Xalion, Square
"Go! I'll deal with the Knight!" Midshipman Oliver Banks shouted to a young Colonial boy. As the boy ran off, the commando was grazed by a bullet from the Knight's gun. Fortunately, it had only been a graze, and only a small amount of blood trickled out of the wound. It was quickly cauterised, just as Banks fired a white laser bolt from his CI-56. The bolt found its mark, passing right through the Knight's heart. Then the insurgent fell to the ground dead.
In the brief respite, he paused to recall what all had happened once Ambassador Rhodes had descended into the Underground. They had heard shouts and gunshots coming from close by, and had gone to investigate. There had been twenty of them, and Banks, second in command of Vertigo Team, had led them to the square. They had found an ongoing massacre. Fortunately, the Colonial soldiers were grouped in a way that was easy to disrupt. Especially as distracted as they were by killing the protesters.
At first, they hadn't even noticed the Confederate soldiers that had wandered into the bloodbath. But then one had shouted something in Colonial Standard, and the soldiers had counterattacked. Now the Vertigo soldiers were on the defensive and slowly being killed one by one. From the corner of his eye, Banks spotted a Colonial sniper. He dove to the ground as a bullet raced towards him, rolled to the side as a Knight's blade tried to decapitate him. Another Vertigo soldier shot the sniper, but was overwhelmed moments later by Colonials.
As for Banks, he noticed the group of soldiers around him getting thicker. They had swords raised, and he knew he wouldn't be able to take them all at once. Or at least, not in a fair fight. Switches in his gauntlets flipped downwards, and thick streams of white flame leapt from narrow metal tubes. Several were immolated instantly, others managed to avoid the blaze. Amidst the screams of the soldiers, the screams of the protesters continued, and Banks prayed that a decent number managed to escape with the distraction his men had provided. He looked on his HUD, and noticed that his was the last lifesign for the whole squad. He was alone now, and alone with the Colonial soldiers, who seemed to be multiplying. He raised his rifle, and opened fire into the Colonial soldiers. One of them hurled a concussion grenade. Its blast knocked Banks backwards, where he finally landed on the steps of the Dome. And before he could do anything else, a Knight's blade had lodged in his neck, between the neck and collarbone.
On the balcony, George wanted nothing more than to shout that those were his men saving lives at the cost of their own. But it would help nothing. And he knew that they had made their decision. They had probably removed Confederate insignia before their failed rescue attempt. Now they were truly in the hands of the Cardinal, and all the Confederate delegation could do was wait.

"They would be laughing at me? Why would they? The Federated Colonies accomplished their purpose. Right now, the Invaders are being stopped at Terra Nova. And the catastrophic casualties the Colonies will earn for this will only make my job easier. I would say that I started this right on time.", Cardinal answered, smirking. "And humanity? I never had it. Humanity is useless. It only makes humans weak. Look at what they did to you and to the Colonials. The once proud humans, conquerors of galaxies, explorers of the universe! Stuck in their own little declining nations, breeding and living with lowly aliens. It's time for that to change. We can show no mercy, no compassion. No great nation was ever born peacefully. Even the proud Colonies, with all their pacifism, were born in the fires and massacres of the Secession Wars." The silver haired girl laughed. "And of course that I don't need to justify this. I'm simply getting rid of the filth. Of the bad. Of the weak, the ones who think that their simple birth gives them rights.. gives them freedom.. all lies. All what matters is power. And they are powerless, so they shall die."
Down below, the Colonial soldiers, or for those who knew what was happening, Knights in Colonial uniforms, continued their slaughter, determined. The Confederate soldiers fighting there were brave.. but it was all in vain. They were outnumbered, surrounded. There was no way out. No way to escape. For them, or for the civilians. And as the soldiers brought their flamethrowers, it was all over. The fires of hell were unleashed on the square.. with the flamethrowing teams advancing from all corners. The screams of the people burning alive rose to the sky in desperation.. but the sky, covered in the dark clouds, remained silent. Focusing their efforts on exterminating the ones who were fighting back, the soldiers advanced. No mercy. No thinking.
"Feel free to report it. That, if you will ever return back to the Confederacy. That depends on my mood.. obviously.", Cardinal replied. "Take them away, and lock them somewhere. I want to enjoy this.. without them to disturb me.", she ordered to one of the Knights. "Have fun!", was all the blind girl said, as the knights pushed the members of the delegations away from her, and back in the palace.
Even here, deep inside, the screams of those dying in the distance were still to be heard, although muffled. They were locked in a small room, empty, except for a few decorations, and a large book. A painting was hanged on the wall, a pretty old one by the looks of it. It showed a group of people, humans and aliens, waving blue-red flags, and clashing with soldiers in gray uniforms who were firing upon them. The situation depicted there was surprisingly similar to a much recent one.. but well, the way the fight in the painting was going on was obviously different. A small tag described the name of the painting in a couple of languages. The Uprising of Xalion, 2648
Suddenly though, the eerie silence in the room was interrupted by the sounds of two gunshots, and by the sounds of two bodies falling down to the ground. And then, someone opened the door, entering the room, only to fall down on its own.
A person slowly stood up, wearing what had once been the pike gray uniform of the Frekorps, now a mess covered in bloody red, not all of it of the wearer's, clearly. The helmet, worn poorly, showed the messy and partially blood stained brown hair of a young boy. And as he stood up, the foreigners were able to vaguely recognize the Obersleutnant. The volunteer looked terribly, pale, and weakened. His shirt had been used to slow down the bleeding from a bullet hole he had in his chest, while the second bullet that had been fired at him had stopped in the cross the Confederate ambassador had given him, probably saving his life. The coat above was stained in both his blood, and that of the bodies on which he had been thrown, and of the bodies which had been thrown on him. In other words, he pretty much looked half-dead.
"So...do you guys.. want to get out..?", the boy asked weakly, breathing heavily.

"You're alive,Oberlieutenant," George observed. Without his armour, his visage could be seen clearly. His eyes were grey like a block of granite, and his hair was the gentle brown of an autumn leaf. His armour had been taken, but the commandos had been allowed to wear the jumpsuit-like fatigues that went under the main equipment. Carter hadn't been so lucky. He wore a prisoner's uniform.
All of the escorts had been relieved of their equipment. Only Bethany remained relatively unmolested. She still wore the white outfit she had worn onto Xalion, although her jewellery had been taken. "Good to see you again, Oberleutenant, " she said truthfully. "And if you have a plan of escape, all of us are interested."
As for Carter, he was surprised the Knights had allowed the volunteer to live. They had shown no mercy to anyone else. He said evenly, "I'm sorry I misread your pulse earlier. They took my equipment, but I can still set any broken bones you may have." He then added, "I just hope Director Silva didn't see what just happened. If she did, I promise she'll try to start a war."
George suddenly said, "It seems once again, we're at your command. Most of my men are dead in the square, when they tried to stop the massacre. So it seems that as of now, we are your forces. Three veteran commandos who feel naked without armour, a veteran Intelligence agent, and the lovely Ambassador. An escape means a dangerous, high stakes game where you will need all of us. Since you're the King, how will you move these chess pieces?"

"Not for long, I'm afraid.", the Oberstleutnant replied with a sad smile. And as if to confirm his words, a drop of blood from the shirt cloaked in blood beneath his cloak, to the ground, slowly but surely, rhythmically, followed by another, another, and another. "It's okay. It's far too late for me anyway. And I was probably dead for a few moments anyway, who knows.. God, my head hurts.. everything hurts." , the boy then told Carter, losing his focus a little towards the end.. "Without any professional medical help, I'll probably die in some time from the internal bleeding. I only managed to even survive until now because of this." Saying that, the volunteer took out a few orange syringes. "Combat Stimulants. But they won't hold forever. Until then, I still have an order, and that's obviously, to save the foreign delegations."
As soon as he finished speaking though, the Oberstleutnant started coughing, blood. "Luckily, they did not burn the bodies yet.. that's why once I woke up, I managed to somehow climb out of that pile of dead bodies. I know my way around the palace.. the Freikorps had guard duties assigned here when the Guards were away." The boy made a short pause, catching his breath, before smiling again. "Well, they never told us about anything like this when we signed up for the Volunteer Corps.. damn it all. And for a lowly volunteer lieutenant colonel to be the King.. this is bad, really bad. I just hope that.. the Armed Forces outside of Xalion know what's happening.. that Central knows what's happening.. if not this is bad, really, really bad." The wounded volunteer coughed yet again. "We'll firstly have to get your equipment back, before we try to make contact with some of the loyalist forces.. I've heard some of the knights mentioning that there are still pockets of resistance out there. After that, we'll get you all to a spaceport, where we'll find a ship so that you can leave. That should do it.. but.. I can't guarantee.. that we will actually be able to get out of here. It's a warzone out there."

"Well... this is indeed relieving...", said the Kirdoni Ambassador, who no longer had his rifle in his possession. "I'd want to get good ol' Lucretia back in my hands. All I want know is to bust some skulls."
"Easy, Ambassador..", nudged the Tesla Trooper. HE still had his power armour on, for it was actually impossible to remove(Tesla troopers are bound to their armor for life). But the knights removed the power generator, so now he can't shoot any blasts of electricity.
"Anyway, my good King...", said the Ambassador once again. "You have a no-longer-lightning shooting Tesla Trooper that needs to get his power generator back, a trio of riflemen with no rifles, and an Ambassador that would love blowing heads open with clean holes. Luckily, the Pryzniki have somehow hidden some of their flash grenades..."

"Bodies," George said when the Oberleutenant had finished. "The Knights took Jack's. But never mind about it now. Enough have died rescuing the dead today. We should focus on getting home."
The other members of the delegation nodded, understanding the sensibility in the statement. Carter asked first, "All right. Well, you have all of us. So, where are they keeping our equipment? If you feel up to it, lead the way."
Karsopolis, Confederate Space
"You think I give a damn if it's a foreign planet?" Isabel asked as she physically grabbed on of her agent's shoulders. "It could be Karlaazen and I'd be telling you the same thing! Now rescue my family. Diplomacy, alliances, intergalactic war all be damned. You saw what those Axiom freaks did on the broadcast! WHO KNOWS what they're doing to Carter and Bethany?!"
She then paused and added, "I didn't see Jack either. That doesn't bode well at all."
Suddenly, the agitated Intelligence Director turned as a hand went to her shoulder. "Isabel," a woman said calmly. Her hair was black like a raven's feather, and her eyes were gold like the afternoon sun. "You're worried. All of us are, but you dont want to invade a foreign system. We dont know what's waiting for us. And you want us to violate our most basic directive. You would have us go in guns blazing. That's not us. That's the military. We operate from the shadows, or we let them handle it. The only exception is emergencies, like when you had us deter the Keltakens during the Drathian Civil War."
"All of these are useless bits of information, Alice," Isabel replied as water gathered in her eyes. "If you're not helping me, I'm afraid you're an obstacle. Karson already refused to deploy the remnants of our military. He was distant, kept talking about major change. New leadership. Frankly, I dont know what the hell he was talking about. But please, dont desert me now. Not you too. My son is in the sadistic hands of Terran freaks who are doing God-knows-what." The first tear descended as she added, "And I sent him there, Alice. Intelligence has the resources to stage rescue and you know it. Please, help me save him."
Alice looked at the ground, torn by the decision she faced. Evetually, she slowly exhaled and said, "No. As Assistant Director of Imperial Intelligence, I, Alice Kennison, am taking control until this is resolved. I hope Carter returns as well, but we're not starting a war for you."
"Fine," Isabel said coldly as she turned away. "Let the record show that on this day, the members of Imperial Intelligence, up to and including the Assistant Director Alice Kennison, mutinied in an effort to avoid their ancient duty. To finish the mission and never leave members behind. Now, Intelligence is just a group of state enforcers who act as they themselves desire. Never mind the citizens we were supposed to protect."
One agent opened his mouth to speak, but Alice silenced him with a look and a raised hand. For a moment, it seemed like Isabel would add more, but then she began to hurry towards the door. When it opened, she ventured into the pouring Karsopolan rain.

"It should be nearby.. follow me. We don't have a lot of time..", the Oberstleutnant weakly replied, before he turned around, leaving the room, followed by the others.
It was quiet.. far too quiet. Muffled sounds of explosions could be heard from somewhere in the distance, but the palace itself was quiet, and dark. There no signs of anyone else except for them. In front of the door, two dead bodies of the Knights that had been guarding them were lying on the floor, each with a bullet in their chests. They probably hadn't been expecting anyone to actually come to try and save the foreigners.. and who could blame them? All of those who could have tried were supposedly dead.. or nearly dead.
Weakened, the young officer however didn't care about his imminent death. All he had to think about was that he had to get this people out before. It didn't matter that they were foreigners, or that they were former enemies. They had nothing to do with what the Knights were doing. The Freikorps was assigned to protect them. And that assignment hadn't ended yet. A Colonial soldier would never break his orders. So the boy led them through the hallways he knew so well, in the middle, of an empty palace, the ghostly shell of what it had once been.
As the reached a corner, the Oberstleutnant signaled the others to remain quiet, as he looked over the corner, noticing too lazy Knights guarding a room. The two of them, unprepared, had no chance, as with precise shots, the volunteer used his pistol to kill them both. As two dead bodies fell to the ground, red staining their white-black uniforms, the officer sighed, relieved. It really seemed that the Knights had relaxed their defenses. Following him, the entire group entered that room.
The room had approximately the same size as the one in which they had been held, and was decorated with the same dull gray color like most of the palace that wasn't really a palace. The first thing they would notice was a human standing in the far corner. Luckily, since they had no weapons, no one was able to shoot him, until a few seconds passed, and they noticed that it was actually a hologram. The Oberstleutnant, having known that all around, put his pistol back in his holster.
The man was wearing the blue-red uniform characteristic to the Colonials, but the colors were those of the Freikorps, with the grayish blue and the vermillion red that were also on the uniform of the boy, although the man's uniform was clearly ceremonial. The man seemed to be rather old, but had a dignified and charismatic look. He was holding a small, ceremonial dagger in his right hand, a dagger looking exactly like the one that was depicted on a flag behind him. It looked like the Colonial flag, but a closer inspection showed that it was actually a larger version of the armband the Oberstleutnant and all the other volunteers had been wearing. The blue-red-blue Colonial flag, but with its emblem replaced by a skull, holding the same dagger in its clenched teeth, and with a black band beneath it, spotting the words Freiheit oder Tod.
Freedom or Death.
In his left hand, he was holding an open and old looking scroll, with a rather known title, and a beginning familiar to all those versed even a little in Colonial history. The Articles of Colonization. Conscious of their responsibility before all races of the galaxy, inspired by the determination to promote unity, freedom, and equality, the representatives of the Colonies and their allied worlds have gathered here today, on the planet of Terra Nova, to end oppression and darkness, and to build a brighter future for the entire universe..
A small tag next to the hologram was mentioning the man's name. Alexander von Scheerling
The Colonial stopped, saluting in the Colonial way, with his fist clenched over his chest. Offering your heart for the Colonies. And that man certainly deserved the salute, even if it was just his hologram. Alexander von Scheerling. The founder of the Freikorps. The first Hegemon of the Colonies.
Leaving that aside, the equipment of the foreigners had been thrown of randomly in the other corner of the room, without the jewelry of the ambassador, of course. The Oberstleutnant hurried them to equip themselves, so that they could run, and after everyone took their equipment, the officer led them out. Running through the hallways, they met no other Knights, until they reached into a small room. An office.
It looked pretty normal. Rather large, with books and stands everywhere, and a small desk in the other side. But in the middle of it, a computer like projector was showing a huge and detailed hologram of the Milky Way, gathering all the data that the Colonials had. It was the office of the Hegemon.
"The Hegemon told us about it. It's not know by many people, so the Knights shouldn't know it..", going behind the desk, the young officer went through the emblem of the Colonies, that was carved on the back wall. A black eagle, proudly standing on top of a laurel crown, that surrounded twelve stars and a War Cross. The boy pressed some of the stars in a certain order, and one of the book stands slid in, revealing a hidden tunnel. The polluted air of Xalion started to enter the roo through it...the way wide enough for two normal people to pass through it. That was their way out.
"Let's go.", the boy said, as they finally left the palace.
Leaving the darkness, the group eventually saw the light, that, if the yellowish artificial lights of Xalion could count as it. The ground was shaking continuously as they exited the tunnel on what seemed to be a platform, a good distance away from the Hegemonic Palace. The ground was littered with dead bodies and blood. Above them, a hurricane was unleashed in the dark cloudy skies of Xalion, and it was raining with golden, acid, and polluted water. But as they arrived on the surface, they noticed what had been those lights they had seen. Not the artificial lighting system, because it was offline. But golden, shining, explosions in the form of mushroom clouds, somewhere in the distance, everywhere in the distance. The Oberstleutnant wanted to say something, but he was interrupted by an unbearable screeching sound, as something crashed through the clouds.
A gigantic battlestar appeared from the dark hurricane, falling towards the Earth, burning, damaged, screeching as it collapsed. The C.M.S. Terra Nova. Horribly devastated, the ship nearly crashed to the ground, before it managed to jump away, right at the last moment, before it could have crashed somewhere in the distance. There was no help they could get from the ships in the orbit, it seemed like..
"Well..", the officer replied weakly. "Does any of you perhaps know how to operate an old Colonial battlestar?"
