So, with the Conference drawing near(at least I hope so), I think it's time to talk a little bit about the Invaders and their plot. This forum has been kinda inactive over the past few weeks, probably because of finals, work, and other real life stuff. I sure do hope that we will return to more normal levels of activity soon.
As everyone knows, for quite a long time, the Invaders and their plot and the story arcs centered around them and their invasions have been the center of this roleplay. Their initial introduction has been a little hurried, but ever since, I had time to think forward about them and possible future plots. Most of the response to the Invaders has been good, I mean, at least I hope that they and their plots have been interesting to roleplay for everyone. Even so though, I got my fair share of criticism, especially for taking this long to expand on them and the other orders, and for revealing too little about them, the main reason for why some of their technology, and things related to them, like the Ancient Swords, do seem to be relatively "magical". The Xenoliths/Markers are in a similar category, and there were some who said that they weren't exactly fit for a sci-fi roleplay. I haven't exactly been the best at roleplaying them.
One of the problems is that ever since I've introduced the Invaders for the first time, I've really thought them and greatly expanded their story, modifying it multiple times, so my work on them has multiple inconsistencies and mistakes. Names have been changed. Conceptions have been modified. This was probably confusing, and if we're going to continue with this plot, I'll probably have to make several explanation posts to clear things out.
As I've said a few times before, what everyone has been fighting until now is one of the Twelve Orders of the Invaders, although technically speaking, they're the thirteenth. Their main ability as an order is to resurrect enemies and turn them into one of theirs, using enemy equipment, and so on, their normal abilities. They act as a vanguard of sorts. Up until now, they're the only order that has actively been showed, although two others have been mentioned, although not named.
Normally, after the Conference, I was thinking of a story arc set in the Colonies that would have ended up by introducing the other twelve orders, basically what I've originally called the True Invaders. But while thinking about it, I've realized that if we follow that plot, and continue with the Invaders, it will take a lot of time.
We've spent so much time on only the initial order. Assuming that I would start by introducing one of the other orders, everyone would be active, and we would move on, by the time the last of the orders would be introduced, and we would move on to what actually the Invaders are, and they reasons for doing this, and so on, a lot of time would have passed. I can't imagine how long would it take, but quite possibly, more than the amount of time we have spent with them until now.
And then, coming to the main problem, I don't think that I will be capable to carry on with such a plot. It would be simply gigantic, more than anything I have done before. And my performance with the Invaders until now has been fairly mediocre. I'm afraid I created a lot of inconsistencies about them, and failed to use them properly. I quite honestly don't know if I will be able to continue with it. While I have a rough sketch of what I want to happen, creating twelve individual and different Invader types, expanding on them, using them, and while being careful not to create conflicts with realism, already existing history, and so on, would take a lot of effort.
I'm also afraid that such a focus on the Invaders has been inhibiting this roleplay. Before them, we had a lot of things going on, a lot of activity, a lot of different story lines and stuff. But ever since I introduced them, everything seemed to be focused on them. Threads and storylines which do not focus at all on them have been really few. The Invader plot has also probably been the main reason for why a couple of our players have went totally inactive, and for why the number of players on this forum isn't growing.
So now, after the Conference, I could keep the Invaders only at what we've been fighting with until now, focus on them, use them to reveal some stuff, and then in the very near future get to a final battle type of event, which depending on the result would have consequences on everyone taking part in it, but if it ends with a victory, it would mean that the Invaders would be repelled for another time, with a large part of their secrets found out, and I'll just put them away, keeping the other orders for a possible future return of the Invaders.
Or, I could still try to continue with what I initially had in mind. But I've already described all the problems that would arise.
Simply jumping out with something like this might be strange, but I had these doubts on my mind for quite a while. It would be nice to know the opinions of the others.
